The DDMF was formed in 2010 under the auspices of the NRF, as an independent, private foundation with 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. It is administered in parallel with the NRF board and staff. The DDMF will become a self-supporting friends’ organization which will oversee maintenance and administration for the park in the future. The DDMF has established an endowment to provide for ongoing maintenance.
“ The Maya Lin sculpture for Queen Ann Square is just the sort of project that Newport needs now and that Doris Duke would have loved. In a low-key manner, it connects Newport's present with its past through the inspired imagination of one of the world's great artists. The work awakens an historic site with powerful visual ideas in a discreet manner to make it a place for public gatherings and events. Newport residents should be proud to have added, at no public expense, a great work of art that elegantly speaks of its history in today's visual vocabulary. Maya Lin's important sculpture adds to the cultural heritage of Newport as her work has to our nation's capital and to other cities around the world. ”
